The Association of Mariana Islands Mayors, Vice Mayors and Elected Municipal Council and the Guam Mayors Council donated 200 cases of bottled water for Typhoon Soudelor victims on Saipan.

AMIM turned over the donation to the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council for distribution.

Council chair Antonia M. Tudela said the council, which includes vice chair Alicia S. Igitol and secretary Lareina C. Camacho, will be making bottled water deliveries to various sectors of the community.

Tudela, in a letter to AMIM president Malissa Savares, thanked Guam’s mayors for the donation.

“The Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council leadership deeply appreciates the thoughts and prayers from the Guam fellow mayors for the island and people of Saipan’s speedy recovery when we were caught completely off-guard by Typhoon Soudelor’s merciless devastation and destruction,” Tudela said.

“Soudelor left Saipan in a mess without reliable electricity, potable water, ice, and life’s basic necessities. …Such unfathomable situation that arguably caused by miscalculation is a cause for concern not only for the safety of the community but also the health, wellbeing and security of the people during this unusual state of calamity and devastation,” she added.

CNMI mayors and municipal council members fully became a part of AMIM after a swearing-in ceremony on Feb. 24 of this year.

AMIM was first formed in May 1990 and embraces Guam and the CNMI’s mayoral and municipal council leaderships. The goal and objectives of AMIM is to enhance, promote, and preserve the cultural traditions and heritage of the people of the Marianas.

It also aims to motivate greater citizen interest and participation in municipal matters, work to strengthen the competency of local governing bodies, improve the quality of life on the islands, and strive to develop more programs that will mutually benefit all the islands.
