Over $8M in assistance funds OK’d
About $8.2 million has been approved for disaster-related assistance in the CNMI, as recovery and relief efforts continue in the aftermath of Typhoon Soudelor.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency also reported that as of yesterday morning, 7,749 have registered for assistance and 3,109 houses have been inspected
Survivors are still being encouraged to register for assistance.
FEMA earlier issued an advisory on the disaster assistance payments, cautioning those who availed of the assistance to “be cautious” and use the funds wisely.
Funds, whether by check or direct deposit from the U.S. Treasury, will be in the form of a grant to make either minimal temporary repair on damaged homes or for rental assistance.
The payment will be followed within a day or two by a letter explaining what the money is intended for. It is important that the payment be used only for the intended purpose.
“Inspectors are in the field to confirm your loss,” said Stephen M. DeBlasio Sr., federal coordinating officer of FEMA. “We encourage residents with property damage to register quickly with FEMA and be ready to welcome our inspectors who will help speed your claim process.”
Inspectors continue to examine property damage as part of the FEMA process that brings assistance to Saipan residents who have registered in the wake of Typhoon Soudelor.
