Drunk man allegedly threatens to kill people, including 2 cops
An intoxicated man allegedly harassed and threatened to kill some people, including two police officers, in Garapan last Friday afternoon
Omar Raja Nawaz, 25, was taken to Superior Court yesterday on charges of disturbing the peace and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $1,250 cash. Preliminary hearing is on Sept. 9 at 9am.
Assistant public defender Matthew Meyer was appointed as counsel for Nawaz. Assistant attorney general Barbara Cepeda appeared for the government.
Police detective Daniel Maliuyaf stated in his report that the Department of Public Safety received a complaint on Friday at 4:45pm about a man, later identified as Nawaz, who threatened to kill another man at a hotel’s beach concession in Garapan.
Two police officers arrived at the concession and met with the male caller, who told them that Nawaz walked up to him that day at 4:30pm and threatened to kill him.
The victim allegedly detected a strong odor of alcohol from Nawaz’s breath.
Another person said Nawaz approached him under the tent and started bothering him by asking for cigarettes.
At 5pm, the two officers walked to Hyatt Beach, where they saw Nawaz swimming in the water and shouting. As the officers were trying to handcuff Nawaz, the defendant pulled back his hands. The officers then grabbed his arms and secured him.
While the officers were escorting him to the police vehicle, Nawaz allegedly resisted and struggled. Nawaz almost sprained police officer Hans Pua’s right thumb.
As the officers were transporting him to the Department of Corrections, Nawaz allegedly threatened to kill “all of them.”
Nawaz also allegedly tried to kick one officer with his right foot.
Last June, police arrested Nawaz for allegedly kicking a car parked at a poker arcade in Sadog Tasi.
