Judiciary awarded $54K grants
Joseph M. Diego, the USDA Area II director from Guam, recently announced the award of two grants to the CNMI Judiciary. The larger of the two grant awards, an Economic Impact Grant for $34,000, will purchase and retrofit a four-wheel drive vehicle for the Judiciary Marshal Service Division. The Marshal’s Division will use the vehicle in its service of jury summons and warrants and in the transport of detainees and arrestees pursuant to its statutory duties.
The second grant, a Community Facilities Grant for $20,000, will enable the busy Superior Court’s Clerk of Court’s Office to purchase new computer workstations and a database server replacing obsolete technology. Patrick V. Diaz, Superior Court Clerk of Court said, “The new equipment will provide the staff of the Clerk’s Office with the tools to operate more efficiently in the timely provision of service to the public.”
Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio, who chairs the Judiciary Grants Committee, said, “Obtaining these grant awards provides us all with a good deal of satisfaction. The writing and submission of the requests was an involved task; we certainly appreciate the help of Joseph Diego, Area II Director, and Anthony Barcinas, business/community program specialist of the USDA Guam office. The grant awards will make a significant difference in how the Marshal Service Division and the Superior Court’s Clerk of Court’s office are able to perform their important duties for the community.”
Judiciary Law Enforcement and Security director Ursula Lifoifoi-Aldan added, “The Marshal Service Division and the Office of Adult Probation have a shared law enforcement obligation along with other CNMI law enforcement agencies to the public. …This award is responsive to safety-based practices. It enhances officer safety for the marshals and the Bench Warrant Task Force team when in the field and in the transport of detainees. It enhances the safety of detainees, as well as the community at large. Thank you USDA!” (NMI Judiciary)
