Just recently, Duty Free Shoppers donated $50,000 to the Red Cross.
Bank of Guam also donated $20,000 to the organization. The bank’s vice president and branch manager, Larry Philip, says they’re happy to help the people of Saipan however they can. “Supporting the Red Cross impacts the entire community; this is the right thing to do.”
MARPAC also stepped up to the plate and donated $10,000.
Previous donors include Joeten DaiDai Foundation, E-Land, Best Sunshine, First Hawaiian Bank, Bank of Hawaii, Transpac Corp., Luen Fong, Triple B Forwarders, Delta Air Lines, Ayuda Foundation (Guam), and Chinese Association (Guam).
Donations are especially needed following the NMI Chapter’s announcement that their annual Club 200 Super Heroes Dinner scheduled for Oct. 3 is cancelled. This is event is a major fundraiser for the Red Cross, but employees and volunteers must focus solely on improving lives and helping those most affected by the storm. The Red Cross encourages all previous ticket buyers to support relief efforts by making a financial contribution.
Through Aug. 24, the Red Cross has served more than 6,500 people on Saipan by providing nearly 29,000 meals and snacks, more than 1,800 cleanup kits and almost 65,000 bulk items such as food, water, soap, and toilet paper. Those in need receive emotional support, health services, and household items. Those in greatest need may receive cash assistance; to date, more than 2,000 Saipan families have received financial assistance.
Local Red Cross workers say they appreciate the generosity of the Saipan community. “It’s our mission to assist those in need on Saipan and we can’t accomplish our mission without local support,” said John Hirsh, executive director of the NMI Chapter. “Our community’s support and generosity during this time of great need on the island is both necessary and much appreciated.”
The community can help by donating to Red Cross Disaster Relief by visiting redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. Donors can also make a donation specifically to the American Red Cross Northern Marianas Islands Chapter by emailing nmichapter@redcross.org. Donations to disaster relief will be used to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small.
Those in need and who have not already contacted the Red Cross should call 234-3459. This call is free when made with most prepaid phones. Due to high call volumes, patience is appreciated and calls after hours are preferred. Those seeking assistance should only visit the Red Cross office with an appointment. (ARC)
