Man gets 1-year sentence for domestic violence
Former Corrections officer Mariano Q. Falig Jr., who slashed the tire and scratched the vehicle of his then-pregnant girlfriend and threatened to kill her outside a bar in Garapan last November, has been sentenced to a year in prison.
Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio gave Falig 230 days of credit for time served.
Falig pleaded guilty to assault and criminal mischief as part of a plea deal.
Falig threatened the victim and damaged her vehicle with a knife on Nov. 26, 2014, on Saipan.
Police detective Flora Danica B. Aguon stated in her report that, according to the victim, she and co-workers had gone to the Abyss Bar and Restaurant in Garapan when Falig confronted her outside the bar, accused her of having an affair, and then slashed the front right tire of her vehicle with a knife.
Falig also used his vehicle to hit and scratch the victim’s car three times, and then used the knife to scratch her car twice.
He also threatened to kick the victim’s stomach and cut her neck. The victim at that time was five months pregnant with their child.
When she told him she was going to call the police, he got into his vehicle and left the area.
The girlfriend said Falig has been abusing her many times in the past but she never reported it to police.
In March 2014, a federal court jury acquitted Falig of charges that he distributed methamphetamine or “ice” on Saipan.
