Cataluna, Avendano get FilTaga July Ace
Ruben Avendano and Freddie Cataluna had a 1-2 finish in the Filtaga July Ace of the Month Tournament at the Marianas Country Club late last month to notch the club’s monthly awards.
Avendano shot a field-best net 70 to take the B division July Ace, while Cataluna carded a net 71 to take the monthly plum in the A division.
The 22-handicapper Avendano had a gross 92 built from his 44 in the first nine holes and 48 in the last. He saved par in holes No. 3, 4, 8, 14, and 15 to beat Raffy Piamonte (net 71) in the B division.
In the A division, Cataluna had the second best gross score behind William Retardo (76) at 77 and ended up on top of his field as his 6 handicap gave him a one-shot lead over the Mariana Resort executive chef. Retardo finished with a net 72 with his 4 handicap. Cataluna took the close win as he made par on the last hole, the par-4 368-yard No. 18, while Retardo had a bogey. Cataluna also had pars on four other holes at the back nines (Nos. 10, 13, 15, and 17) for a gross 40. At the front nine, the A division winner tallied a 37, as he made a birdie on the par-3, 178-yard No. 8 and had pars on holes No. 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9.
