Caranto, Boranah top foes in Week 2

Jexler Caranto and Kim Boranah showed tough form in Week 2 of the IT&E Singles & Mixed Doubles Badminton Tournament 2012 played at the NMBA Gym at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.
Caranto pulled off an upset over Rodwealth Espana in the men’s B singles last Friday despite losing the first game. Espana won the opening game by four points, 17-21, but Caranto recovered in the last two games, 21-10, 21-17, to steal the win. Before his three-game win over Espana, Caranto first swept Aries Cordero, 21-6, 21-14.
Also winning in two games in the women’s B singles was Boranah, who downed Shirley Kim last Saturday, 21-8, 21-14.
Then last Sunday, Boranah and Caranto teamed up in sweeping Roger Vales and Babes Cielo in the mixed doubles B, 21-18, 21-10.
Other winners in the mixed doubles B last Sunday were Ramir Belialba and Cristy Villaflor against Jeff Riman and Annette Quiambao, 21-19, 21-18; Vic Regis and Marylyn Montano versus Joel and Alma Ortega, 17-21, 21-16, 24-22; and Wowie Abuel and Jane Tupaz over Riman and Quiambao, 17-21, 21-8, 21-14.
In the mixed doubles C, Brandon Talania and Roma Barlao, Son Jae Ok and Fen Luan Li, and Belialba and Irish Pagarao made short work of their respective foes, while Dick Koo and Woo Kyung Bae and Rommel Bartolome and Tupaz needed three games to thwart their separate opponents.
In the tough mixed doubles A, Ferdie Arago and Lani Bartolome recorded a 21-16, 21-13 win over Jerry Hibi and Toshiko Obata, who also bowed to Hapi Gabriel and Hannah Choi, 18-21, 15-21. The third game in the mixed doubles A was extended in three games with Andreau Galvez and Angie Ito slipping past Sam Jones and Loyda Ito, 21-16, 19-21, 21-18.
In the singles games last Sunday, winning their respective games were men’s A’s Macoi Aguda, men’s B’s Regis, and Oh Imbog, men’s C’s Riman, Son Jae Ok, Ortega, and women’s C’s Pagarao.
In last Friday’s results, Melvin Capalad and Mulan Ta, Panapa Peteru and Lazaro, and the Ortegas swept their foes, while Bernard Aquino and Christina Ta prevailed in three games in the mixed doubles C. In mixed doubles B, Imbog and Obata topped Chirs Hilario and Annette Ta, 21-19, 21-14, while Talania and Obaldo edged Celso Agui and Loyda Ito, 21-16, 17-21, 21-15. Last Friday’s games also had eight singles matches with four won after two games.
For the Saturday matchups, the first three singles pairings were decided in three games, while five of the last six were won in two games. In the mixed doubles, extended matches dominated the division, as six pairs needed three games to survive their respective opponents.
