The CNMI State Board of Education has unanimously approved a 5-percent salary adjustment for the Public School System’s federal programs officer.

The board agreed at a special meeting yesterday that the increase will be added to Tim Thornburgh’s base salary, which now stands at $65,000 per annum following the adjustment.

Acting on the recommendation made by Education Commissioner Rita Sablan, the board made its decision after the PSS Fiscal, Personnel, and Administrative Committee endorsed the salary hike.

This was among the several issues deliberated on by the FPA committee during its executive session held prior to the 11am special meeting.

Committee chair Tanya King said the salary adjustment is justified by the amount of responsibilities that the federal programs officer has, including his capacity as acting commissioner on various occasions.

According to King, the adjustment will make Thornburgh’s salary commensurate to his responsibilities as well as aligned with other PSS directors

King noted that Thornburgh’s salary increase will solely come from federal funds.
