Improper wiring triggers fire at Pretty Market

Improper wiring reportedly triggered a fire in an office at Pretty Market in Garapan on Friday morning.

No one was injured or received medical treatment during the fire, according to Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Derek Gersonde on Monday.

A visit by Saipan Tribune yesterday afternoon showed that it’s business as usual at the store.

The store held a clearance sale last month.

Gersonde said DFEMS received a call from 911 dispatch about a structure fire at the Pretty Market at 7:51am.

Gersonde said firefighters from the Garapan Station, San Roque Station, Koblerville Station, and members of the Chemical, Biological, Nuclear and High-Yield Explosives Unit from the Susupe Station immediately responded and extinguished the fire by 8:10am.

Arson investigators determined that the fire was caused by an overloaded circuit breaker.

The fire started in the main office from the air-conditioning unit and spread to nearby combustible materials within the office.

Gersonde said the fire was fully contained within the office space because of the noncombustible partition and wall.
