PSS faculty report date pushed back; no date yet on class start for Saipan
Education Commissioner Dr. Rita Sablan said Sunday that certified Public School System faculty and staff on Saipan are due to report to work on Aug. 24, a week from the original date of Aug. 17.
“It has been a week now since the island of Saipan was devastated by Typhoon Soudelor. We hope for the very best as you and your families begin to recover and restore the damage incurred at your home. On behalf of the Board of Education and the PSS key management, I would like to extend to all of you our hope, courage, and the best during this difficult time,” the education chief said in a statement.
Sablan said the school leadership has been very busy in the past few days with the key management and many PSS Central Office program managers in conducting preliminary damage assessment in all schools and centers.
She said they have determined in a consultation meeting last Thursday that it will not be feasible for schools and the Head Start centers and Early Intervention on Saipan to begin classes on Aug. 25 as earlier approved by the Board of Education.
“As a result of this, the report date for certified faculty and staff—190-day employees only—on Saipan has been changed from Aug. 17 to Aug. 24,” she said.
Sablan said the start date of the school year for Saipan schools and centers will be announced sometime this week pending the final facilities damage assessment reports.
Classes on Rota and Tinian will resume as approved by the Board of Education.
Typhoon Soudelor struck Saipan the hardest with its destructive winds.
PSS has been assessing its damage to school facilities.
