Settlement in woman’s discrimination suit OK’d
The federal court on Friday approved the settlement of a discrimination lawsuit filed by a Bangladeshi woman who complained that she was subjected to physical and verbal abuses and a hostile work environment at Pacific Islands Club.
U.S. District Court for the NMI Senior Judge John C. Coughenour said he reviewed the terms of the May 19, 2015, settlement in the lawsuit filed by Samira I. Saures for herself and as guardian for her minor son.
Coughenour found the terms of the settlement to be fair and proper.
Interpacific Resorts (Saipan) Corp., owner of PIC, and Dan K. Thapa and Yue Wang, settled the lawsuit filed by Saures and her child.
Because of the settlement, the parties agreed to request the court to dismiss the lawsuit, with each party to pay its own costs and attorneys’ fees.
Attorney William F. Fitzgerald is counsel for Saures and her child. Attorney Rexford C. Kosack and Glenn A. Jewell is counsel for PIC-Saipan. Attorney Sean E. Frink served as counsel for Thapa and Wang.
It is not clear whether the settlement deal is sealed or not.
Samira began her employment with PIC in March 2008 as a cashier and a waitress. Samira claimed that in August 2009 PIC constructively discharged her because of the harassing workplace.
