Last batch of rebates worth nearly $1.5M out
The Department of Finance on Friday released the last batch of tax refunds for calendar year 2014.
An advisory from the department said the rebates total about $1.49 million with the following breakdown: $1,250,323 in child care tax refunds and $240,644 in regular tax refunds or rebates.
In a statement, acting governor Ralph DLG. Torres lauded the department for the release of the rebates.
“My appreciation to Secretary Larson and the hardworking folks at the Department of Finance for ensuring the expedited release of tax refunds. If you have not received yours yet, please contact the Tax and Revenue office to clear any errors that may exist,” Torres said.
In mid-June, the Finance department started releasing the tax rebates for the July release.
The department said rebates reaching approximately $3.3 million will be sent to close to 5,000 taxpayers.
This batch was released to those taxpayers who filed their returns by March 31, 2015.
The early release of initial batch of rebates provided relief to the CNMI community, with recipients immediately using the checks to purchase basic goods.
Some of the tax checks have been released a couple of weeks ahead of schedule.
Many stores around Saipan reported an influx of residents using the tax checks.
Some stores throughout Garapan, including 99 cents, Martha’s Store, and Joeten Garapan reported entertaining customers with the tax checks on hand buying essential goods such as milk, canned goods, and other items.
In other stores, customers need to spend at least 10 percent of the amount on the check to be able to shop. For instance, a customer with a $1,000 check needs to spend at least $100 for the check to be accepted.
