Rota authorities safely rescued four fishermen from Saipan who were stranded for about five hours when their boat went aground the reef located on the north side of Rota on Saturday morning.

Rota Boating Safety Unit in-charge Police Officer Terry Mesngon told Saipan Tribune yesterday that all four male fishermen, who are Filipino, were not injured and taken to Rota.

Mesngon said the fishermen were subsequently transported back to Saipan by their company’s other boat that fetched them that afternoon.

As of yesterday, the 18-foot fiber glass fishing boat was still stuck between rocks on the reef, according to Mesngon.

The four fishermen were fishing when their boat went aground on the reef. They radioed for assistance, but the back portion or north side of Rota is a dead communication zone.

Mesngon said two Rota fishermen noticed the stranded fishermen, who asked them for help.

The Rota fishermen then notified Rota police about the incident.

Mensngon and five other medics and personnel from Division of Fish and Wildlife then launched a rescue boat.
