Internet services came alive during the early hours yesterday morning after the successful repair of IT&E’s damaged undersea fiber optic cable.

As IT&E continues to restore their network to 100 percent capacity, residents can thank the CS Durable and its crew for progressing on repairs over the weekend. CS Durable is the repair ship hired by IT&E.

IT&E had targeted a 48-hour timeline for repairs. When work began on Friday, IT&E said they aimed to restore services by Monday morning.

IT&E began migrating all circuits and traffic back to the cable early Monday morning.

IT&E said this process is expected to take several more days before it is complete and IT&E’s network is back at 100 percent capacity.

During this time, customers may experience temporary service interruptions as the migration occurs, IT&E said.

Over the weekend, the CS Durable was stationed off the Saipan coast near the Coral Ocean Point Resort. Crew had set up restricted access tape surrounding the work site and were seen working on the beachside. A series of buoys, which appeared to run along the fiber optic line, was set from the shore to the repair ship off the coast.

The CS Durable arrived last Thursday morning. It has returned to the Port of Saipan.

IT&E has described the damage to the fiber optic cable as an “act of God” caused by harsh weather conditions over the years.

The massive communications outage hit the CNMI on July 8 due to the damage to IT&E’s undersea cable.
