Liberation Day parade scheduled for July 11
»Opening of carnival grounds reopening eyed Thursday
The 2015 Liberation Day parade is set to schedule for this Saturday, July 11, after Tropical Storm Chan-Hom’s approach this past weekend caused the July 4 celebration to be postponed.
Saipan Mayor’s Office special assistant Henry Hofschneider said that although the parade is this Saturday, the Commonwealth is still on watch for an approaching storm once again.
“It’s the schedule for now and Mayor David M. Apatang doesn’t want to hold back the parade any longer and it will happen on Saturday. For the storm approaching we’re hoping it doesn’t come here, the winds don’t pick up and conditions are good then it will happen,” Hofschneider said.
If the storm approaches the CNMI, Hofschneider says that they have an alternative date, which is July 18.
“As of today we’re mobilizing other materials in preparation for setting up the new canopies. We’re monitoring the storm and if CNMI Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services advises us not to go forward with the parade on Saturday, the alternative is July 18,” he said.
Skywalker Communications Group public relations manager Kiki Chen said that carnival grounds is eyed for opening this Thursday, July 9.
Chen says that as of now preparations are already mobilizing for the carnival grounds. The carnival grounds will have a new look, instead of the old tents the canopies that were supposedly for the opening of the Liberation festivities will now be used.
Chen also confirmed that this Saturday was the planned date for the Liberation parade, however, with a possible approaching storm an alternative date has been confirmed just in case.
The Liberation parade will be from Quartermaster to Garapan Fishing Base and starts at 9am.
