Tropical cyclone developing near Pohnpei
The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management yesterday urged CNMI residents to monitor the development of the formation of a tropical cyclone northeast of Pohnpei.
According to HSEM, the formation could bring a gradual increase in showers and thunderstorms to the Marianas by the end of the week, with a tropical storm or typhoon over or near the islands over the weekend.
HSEM said the circulation northeast of Pohnpei is expected to gradually begin moving toward the west-northwest in the next day or so.
At the same time, the circulation west-northwest of Chuuk may drift toward the east or east-northeast and gradually be absorbed into the first circulation.
HSEM said there is still some uncertainty in the expected intensity of the storm as well as the exact timing and path that it will take.
The National Weather Service in Guam said westerly monsoon winds of 15 to 30 miles per hour and large waves of 7 to 10 feet and up to 12 feet will continue across much of Micronesia this week.
NWS said sea conditions will be hazardous for the operation of small craft and dangerous for inter-island travel.
