BREAKING NEWS: Govendo finds Corrections Officer Camacho guilty
Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo announced today, Tuesday, his verdict finding Corrections Officer Ray Anthony Maratita Camacho guilty as to the charge of assault and battery for beating then-inmate Ryan Cavalear inside the Department of Corrections.
Govendo set the sentencing for June 6, 2017 at 1:30pm.
Govendo, however, stated that he will not impose jail time at all.
The bench trial began last April 11. Assistant attorney general Matthew Baisley called 11 witnesses, including Cavalear. Defense attorney Colin Thompson called to the witness stand Camacho as well as a former Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent as expert witness.
According to the 34-year-old Cavalear, he is an Army veteran and broke his back during his military service. He testified how two Corrections officers Camacho and Admisen Dasio Haddy beat him up on April 1, 2016 at DOC after he was yelling inside his cell out of frustration for his pain medication as he underwent oral surgery a day before.
Haddy, who entered a plea deal, testified for the government.
