Apatang: Animal shelter volunteers a big help
Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said that volunteers for Saipan’s animal shelter have been a big help to his office and that the dog control program is improving.
“They are very helpful to our staff, they are always there helping, cleaning, walking the dogs, and it’s a great opportunity. We are very thankful for that,” Apatang said.
Jason Hudy, leading the volunteer program for the group Saipan Cares for Animals, said that there are more than 50 volunteers willing to step up and become interested in helping care for the animals.
Hudy said that they have set up programs at the shelter such as adoption, fostering, and outreach.
“The most immediate place to help is volunteering at the shelter,” Hudy said.
Apatang said that the volunteer program had started two weeks ago at the shelter. However, the volunteers were also a part of the dog sterilization services held by Animal Balance, Humane Society International, and Humane Society of U.S in collaboration with the Saipan Mayor’s Office.
The shelter is open from 9am to 11:30am and 4pm to 6pm each day for the volunteers to come in and take care, walk, and love the dogs, according to Hudy.
“Every dog was walked and so much cleaning and organization took place… We have kittens that are in need of fostering…dogs are up for adoption as well,” Hudy said.
The Saipan Cares for Animals will also be joining the 2015 Liberation Day Parade with a float of their own this July 4.
