The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, the CNMI’s state library, kicked off its summer reading program yesterday.

Around 150 kids attended the first whole day of the 12-day Collaborative Summer Library Program.

“The importance of the summer program is to try to capture the kids during their summer break to make sure that we keep them reading, keep them occupied with activities that we think will help them for the next school year,” acting library director Erlinda Naputi said.

This year, the program’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story” and focuses on everyday heroes in the community.

For the first day, Interpretive Ranger Kyle Podziewski of the American Memorial Park spent time with the kids.

The morning sessions of the summer reading program are for children age 6 to 8, while the afternoon sessions are for children who are 9 to 12 years old.

According to Naputi, 75 signed up for the 9:30am to 12:30pm sessions, while 70 will be attending the 1pm to 3pm sessions.

The program includes read-aloud and craft day on Tuesdays, computer day on Wednesdays, special guest day on Thursdays, and movie day on Fridays.

Other program activities are group games, physical challenges, art projects, science and engineering experiments, and independent reading challenges.

Registration for the program is free and includes breakfast and lunch for the kids.

Naputi hopes that through the summer program, the kids will remember something about the library.

“[I hope the kids will have] something to keep them coming back,” Naputi said.

“We want to leave an impression with the kids that the library is here and this is their public library,” she added.
