The Abyss Titans pulled off a stunning 9-6 upset against the top seeded Route 33 Alamo Car Rental in their playoff match in the Budweiser-Saipan Billiards Association Open 8-Ball Thursday League last week.

The Titans were the fourth ranked team after finishing the regular season with a 148-122 and were the underdogs against the Boyet Sequioco-captained squad, which finished atop the standings with a league-best 172-98 record.

In the playoffs, the Titans’ John Reyes, Patrick Cepeda, Randy Sablan, and Jack Thornsaket showed that they were not intimidated by their opponent’s top ranking. The Titans, after Route 33 tied the score at 5-5 following Roman Rodriguez’s win over Ray Matsunaga in the first match of the five singles 8-ball events, won the next four to complete the upset win.

Reyes downed Sequioco, Cepeda drubbed Manny Mariano, and Thornsaket foiled Richard Santos.

The Titans will next face Wild Bill’s after the Wild Wild West completed a 9-5 shellacking of the Jokers Homeboyz in the finals, set tomorrow. Route 33 and the Homeboyz will clash in the battle for third and fourth.

In the Tuesday league, the Jokers IT&E Voyagers (167-118), Smoke Pub Armatech Hustlers (164-121), Abyss Crazy 8 (147-138), and the Jokers STR8 Shooters (140-145) are most likely the competing teams in the playoff round.

Last week’s results saw the Voyagers and Shooters completing 10-5 decisions over the Hustlers and the Abyss Homeboyz II, respectively and the Smoke Pub Destroyers trouncing the Crazy 8, 9-6.

The results of the final elimination round matches last June 16 were unavailable at press time. The Voyagers were scheduled to meet the Crazy 8, the Destroyers played against the STR8 Shooters, and the Homeboyz II faced the Hustlers.
