Guam lesbian couple to apply for marriage application

HAGATNA, Guam (AP)—A lesbian couple who filed a lawsuit to lift the ban on same-sex marriage on Guam will file a marriage application Tuesday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Loretta M. Pangelinan and 29-year-old Kathleen M. Aguero plan to marry June 20.

Their attorney, R. Todd Thompson, says the couple could apply for their marriage license sooner if allowed.

Chief Judge Frances M. Tydingco-Gatewood on Friday gave the territorial registrar and the governor a day or two to get their affairs in order and to begin taking marriage license applications at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The Office of Vital Statistics is where marriage licenses are issued.

Territorial Legislature Vice Speaker B.J. Cruz said that he and Speaker Judith Won Pat “are willing to officiate” at the wedding of Pangelinan and Aguero.

Public Health director James Gillan told the AP that he could officiate over the marriage, if asked, and would also “allow for expedited processing pursuant to the law.”
