The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board approved five new positions for the utility’s power division last Friday.

This came amid discussion about CUC’s restoration efforts during and after Typhoon Dolphin last month.

Board director Albert A. Taitano, who is also chair of the personnel committee, motioned for a vote on these new positions, which are all for power crew linemen.

CUC power division manager Gary Camacho on Friday said they received 131 trouble calls due to Typhoon Dolphin.

There were about 21 CUC crewmen working during the typhoon.

In total, CUC’s call center received 3,992 calls from customers before, during, and after the typhoon.

When asked, Camacho told board members there were about one or two linemen at each feeder.

He said CUC crew worked together for 18-hour shifts, but four remained on shift during the off period.

He said they were lucky that damages weren’t as extensive as they thought.

He said with more personnel they would save money.

Taitano and the board, meanwhile, commended CUC’s restoration efforts.

Taitano called for letters of commendation and certifications for all CUC staff on Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. He also asked that these be placed in a frame.

The board agreed to do so when it was put to a vote.
