DLNR will not pursue resumption of Sabalu Market in Garapan
Department of Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Richard Seman will notify the Sabalu Market to cease its operations at the Garapan Fishing Base.
According to Seman, the Department of Public Lands has informed his office that the temporary authorization, or TA, that allowed the Saipan Sabalu Farmers Market to set up their tents and sales of fresh produce on Tuesday in Garapan has since expired.
“…Supposedly since Sept. 20, 2013,” he said.
“With this information I have to notify [Sabalu Market] president Manny Borja to cease its Tuesday market events immediately,” Seman told Saipan Tribune.
DLNR will not be pursuing the market’s resumption any time soon, he said.
This goes to their effort to ensure success of the CNMI Farmer’s Cooperative Association, he said.
The Farmer’s Co-op is seen as Sabalu’s competitor and runs at the Garapan Public Market right near where Sabalu sets up their Tuesday tents.
DPL has designated a portion of the Garapan Fishing Base to DLNR to operate this public market. The market was rehabilitated and opened in August last year using federal government assistance.
