DFEMS plans to recruit 16 cadets for Saipan, Rota
The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services is planning to recruit 16 cadets to become firefighters on Saipan and Rota.
DFEMS Secretary Claudio K. Norita disclosed in an interview on Friday that they are expecting 10 cadets for Saipan and six more for Rota.
For Saipan, Norita said they anticipate a budget for 10 positions come Oct. 1, 2015, while six will be recruited for Rota.
“So right now we’re working with [Office of Personnel Management] to do the announcement,” Norita said.
The DFEMS secretary said they are hoping to complete the announcement and selection process and if the budget is passed on Oct. 1, then they can start the academy in mid-October 2015.
“We anticipated and reported this to the Legislature when we did the budget hearing,” he said.
The academy is going to run at a maximum of four months. Cadets will undergo basic to advance training plus emergency medical technician training.
Norita said for Saipan, they’re working with the Commonwealth Ports Authority to use their Aircraft Rescue Firefighters training room.
Currently, Saipan has 70 firefighters, Tinian has 11, and Rota has five.
Norita said because of their current budget, the Rota Mayor’s Office is recruiting cadets and probably looking at enlisting six.
Norita said the academy on Rota, which will be held at the Northern Marianas College’s classroom on the island, may run at the same time as the academy on Saipan.
