Red Cross helps residents in wake of typhoon

The American Red Cross quickly launched a relief operation as Typhoon Dolphin passed through the Marianas last weekend. With trained volunteer disaster responders on Saipan, Rota, and Tinian, the Red Cross was able to quickly assess damage and provide emergency assistance.

Strong winds in excess of 50 mph were felt on Saipan and Tinian. Winds on Rota were over 100 mph and caused significant damage to homes, businesses, and agriculture.

Over the next few days the Red Cross will be helping families that were heavily impacted by the storm.

“We met with families on Saturday morning while doing our assessment and immediately provided cleaning supplies and tarps,” said Claudine Atalig, disaster response supervisor. “We understand the suffering of our people and want to provide help to those with homes and belongings that were damaged by high winds and heavy rain.”

The Red Cross will work closely with families who had major damage and provide them with additional resources to help repair their homes and purchase items lost or destroyed in the storm.

The Red Cross is collaborating with government partners and other community organizations to meet the emergency needs of those affected by Typhoon Dolphin. “Collaboration is the only way to truly make a difference in assisting families and making our community more resilient,” said John Hirsh, Red Cross executive director. “No one agency can do it alone. We all need to be sharing information and resources to fully leverage the will of our people to improve lives.”
