DOL recovers more than $10,000 in unpaid wages
The CNMI Department of Labor has recovered more than $10,000 of unpaid wages from various employers in February this year.
Three separate labor complaints were filed with DOL that month.
The complaints triggered investigations, with both employees and employers interviewed by Labor’s enforcement and compliance investigators.
“We sent investigators to know…if the employees are not paid properly or not paid at all,” said Enforcement director Gil San Nicolas adding that for these three cases, it was found that the employees were not being paid properly.
A total of 11 employees filed the complaints. All three establishments settled the cases for $200, $5,000 and $5,033.58 respectively, amounting to $10,233.58 of recovered wages in total.
“The employees received the payments already,” Secretary Edith DeLeon Guerrero said.
According to DOL, it is determined and committed in its enforcement efforts, giving confidence to employees who file a complaint that their complaints will be investigated. It added that their wages earned for hours worked—if found to be violated and withheld illegally—will be pursued for recovery.
The department also believes that these enforcement efforts promote good business environment. Violators of employment laws to include non-payment of wages are held accountable and that such violations will not be condoned as a way of conducting business in the CNMI.
