MCS rallies vs Kagman to earn finals berth

Mt. Carmel School used a five-run sixth inning in completing a 9-6 win over Kagman High School in yesterday’s semifinals of the 2014-2015 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls’ softball tournament at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan ball field.

MCS will face three-peat seeking Marianas High School, a 24-10 winner over Saipan Southern High School last Monday, in the one-game finals on Friday. Kagman and Saipan Southern will play in the Thursday consolation match. Both games are at 4pm.

Amalina Evangelista whacked an RBI triple, while Masami Sato, Jan Travilla, and Quina Flores added RBI doubles each in the bottom of the sixth to help the Lady Knights erase a two-run deficit.

The Lady Ayuyus, trailing 4-0 after four complete innings, came up with six runs bridging the top of the fifth and sixth to grab the lead.

Mt. Carmel, however, won’t go down that easily as the second seeds’ hitting came alive in the bottom of the sixth.

Jehnifer Villagomez had a lead off walk and Kiona Camacho also walked to put runners at first and second.

Sato then doubled to left to score Villagomez then Evangelista followed when she found a gap between deep center field and right field near the Little League fence to bring in Camacho and Sato to give the lead back to MCS, 7-6.

Karleen Reyes had an infield fly for the first out.

Travilla then hit the ball over the Little League fence where at first it was ruled a home run, but the umpires only gave her a double. Her hit allowed Evangelista to cross home plate.

Travilla, who is also part of MCS’ starting unit in girls basketball along with Reyes, scored the Lady Knights’ last run on a Quina Flores RBI double that sandwiched a Luisa Camacho strikeout.

The inning ended when Komi Romolor grounded out to a 4-3 putout play.

Evangelista then held down the Lady Ayuyus in the top of the seventh. She quickly got the two outs with the help of the infield defense as second baseman Villagomez picked out grounders with ease and fielded it cleanly to Luisa Camacho at first base.

Travilla had the game-ending out with a grounder to third.

Evangelista pitched in no relief surrendering two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. She scored twice and had a two-RBI triple in the sixth.

Flores went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple in the first and an RBI double in the sixth. Sato had one run and an RBI double on a 2-for-3 batting. Travilla had an RBI double also in the sixth.

Sato went 2-for-3 each with an RBI triple and an RBI double with the latter adding one run.
