Maria Theresa Dizon, a senior at Marianas High School, is joining the STEP UP Program once again this summer, after working and conducting experiments on her project last year, “Inhibiting the Copula Sivickisi’s (box jellyfish) Stinging Cell Discharge.” She worked under the supervision of Roy Adsit, science teacher at SSHS, and Dr. Angel Yanagihara, assistant research professor at the University of Hawaii and an expert on jellyfish.

Dizon has presented her project in the Asia Pacific Academy of Science, Education and Environmental Management. Her project abstract has been published in the Ethnicity and Disease Journal, which is the official journal for the International Society on Hypertension in Blacks. She competed in the Science Technology Engineering and Math Fair earlier in March and became the overall winner for the 9-12th grade Cluster.

With 1,702 high school students coming from over 75 countries, Maria is the sole representative of the CNMI in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, PA. With a multitude of learning and exploring experiences, the highlights included a Q&A session with a panel of Nobel laureates and exclusive access to a night at the Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Results and awards will be announced soon.

Dizon is under the supervision of her mentor, Adsit, and the PSS Science Program coordinator Annette Pladevega.

“What an honor it is to be a part of Maria’s blossoming future in science as she presents her esteemed work on preventing jellyfish stinging cells. The community stands behind her as we applaud your current successes and future endeavors,” said Pladevega.

“We are very proud of Maria. She represents the best of CNMI science. She is smart and caring and will represent the CNMI magnificently here at Intel ISEF,” said Adsit.

In the future, Dizon plans to pursue a career that involves her two passions: science and law. (PR)
