WIA is now accepting applicants for summer youth jobs program

The CNMI Department of Labor WIA Division has begun its preparations for this year’s Summer Youth Employment and Training Program, which holds significant changes to funding allocations for those considered In-School-Youth, or ISY.

The newly enacted WIOA increases funding for Out-of-School Youths, or OSYs, from 30 percent under the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 to 75 percent. WIOA shifts the primary program focus of Title I youth formula programs to the educational and career success of out-of-school youth.

WIOA outlines a broader youth vision that supports an integrated service delivery system and provides a framework through which states and local areas, including the CNMI, can leverage other federal, state, local, and philanthropic resources to support ISY and OSY. For this reason, the CNMI DOL WIA Division has been actively engaging its other youth program partners, such as the Public School System, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, and Division of Youth Services, to leverage resources alongside WIA so that more ISYs can be served during the Summer Youth Employment and Training Programs.

Employers will be receiving their letters encouraging their partnership and participation. The CNMI DOL WIA is grateful for the many years employers have supported the continued success of this program.

Summer applications will become available online and at the WIA Office on Capital Hill starting today, May 14, with closing application dates for Rota and Tinian set for May 27 and May 29 for Saipan. Age qualification is not younger than 14 (unless an individual with a disability who is attending school under state law) or older than 21 with additional program statutory barriers that must be met.

WIA case managers will be on Tinian and Rota on May 26, 2015. Work schedules are being planned for two weeks beginning July 13-24, 2015, and if slots are not sufficient for phase one, a second phase will open from July 27 to Aug. 7, 2015.

Applications can be downloaded from www.wia.gov.mp. For additional inquiries you may call the WIA Office at 664-1704,05,07,57. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. (PR)
