Public Health officials and participants trumpeted the success of the inaugural Women’s Health Day held at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center last Monday.

According to Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. EHDI data specialist Jose Villagomez Santos, the event started at 8am and concluded at 4pm.

“There were about 55 men and women who signed in to attend the presentations, exhibits, and free screenings.  For every person who viewed the exhibits and got their free health screenings, an incentive was given. Exhibitors and screeners had to sign off on their cards to confirm that person received information and got their screening,” Santos said.

Exhibitors included Hardt Eye Clinic, Karidat/Ayuda Network, CHCC Immunization Program, CHCC HIV/STD Resource and Treatment Cancer, Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, CNMI Women’s Association, CHCC oral health program, CHCC H.O.M.E visiting program, CHCC early detection and intervention, CHCC Non-Communicable Disease, and health screenings from CHCC nurse staff.

Presenters included Dr. Jean Olivia Grant, OB/GYN, Lauri Ogumoro of Karidat, Laura Ogo on the importance of Immunization Program, Dr. Glenda G. Concepcion on mental health, and Dr. Don Hardt of Hardt Eye Clinic on common eye problems.

This is in line with the celebration of month of May as CNMI Women’s Health Month to encourage women to become the primary caretaker of their health. CHCC is joining health organizations across the nation to celebrate the occasion.

Events lined up for the month include a healthy cooking demonstration at the WIC Clinic on May 16. From May 18 to 21 there will be lunch hour walks at the American Memorial Park from 11:30am to 12:30pm.

On May 22, there will be a “Walk in Our Shoes” three-mile race at the Garapan Fishing Base and will include men.

The final event commemorating Women’s Health Month is a Zumba Party on May 28 at the Garapan Central Park from 6pm to 9pm. Health screenings will be available before the Let’s Move Zumba class, starting at 4:30pm.
