Tropical storm to become typhoon, may pass Marianas on Friday

Packing maximum sustained winds of 55 miles per hour, Tropical Storm Dolphin is slowly intensifying and is forecast to become a typhoon tonight, Wednesday, and pass the CNMI and Guam on Friday.

As of 7pm yesterday, the center of Dolphin was 230 miles north of Pohnpei or 885 miles east-southeast of Saipan and 915 miles east-southeast of Guam, according to the U.S. National Weather Service in Guam.

Dolphin’s center is forecast to pass south of or very close to Guam or near Rota on Friday.

NWS urged residents of Ulul in Chuuk State and residents of the Marianas to carefully monitor the progress of this storm.

Drifting west at 3 miles per hour, Dolphin’s tropical storm force winds extend out 140 miles to the southeast of the center and up to 100 miles elsewhere, NWS said.
