Karidat marks 35th anniversary with ‘Karidat Month’
Lt. Gov. Ralph Torres recently proclaimed the month of May as Karidat Month, recognizing the non-profit’s commitment to the island community.
“Karidat Social Services assists people of all economic levels in the community, without regard to race, religion, sex, age, creed, disability or place of origin, to address problems arising from personal or family problems, external circumstances, or intrapersonal conflicts,” the resolution partly states.
The organization is hosting a food drive as a part of its monthlong activities, as promised by its new executive director, Lauri Ogumoro.
Ogumoro said she is concerned that children will not have adequate food after the school year ends. “Having a full pantry ready for when school is out is very important,” she said.
The month, themed “Giving Hope, Building Future,” is also a celebration of the work done to “serve the least of our brothers” in our community, according to Ogumoro.
“The purpose of the events is to come together as members of the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa to support the work of Karidat and the individuals and families we serve,” she told Saipan Tribune. “We hope to inspire members of the diocese to help us fill the Karidat Food Pantry in order to serve our neighbors who are in need.”
Ogumoro also announced that the organization’s new temporary office is in the V.S.S building in Chalan Piao. While there, they will work on obtaining grants that will be used to demolish their old office and build a new one on the same site within two to three years.
“We will be working hard on achieving this goal,” she said.
Karidat Social Services was established on May 5, 1980, and provides direct client services of emergency housing and food assistance, safe housing, advocacy to victims of crime, counseling services, and case management.
