GCA student wins 2nd spot in Law Day poster contest

Euray Lim, a sixth-grade student at Grace Christian Academy, was presented with the Presiding Judge Award for winning second place in the 2012 Law Day poster contest. Lim received a Judiciary history book, a certificate of recognition, and a $50 cash prize from Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja.
“I was surprised and did not expect to win,” Lim later said about her win.
There were five winners in this year’s poster contest for 4th to 6th grade students. All winners received copies of the Judiciary history book and certificates of recognition. Cash prizes were given to the first, second, and third place winners.
The award ceremony was held on May 1, 2012, in the Supreme Court courtroom on Saipan. Acting Chief Justice Alexandro C. Castro led other justices and judges in recognizing the awardees from different public and private schools. Castro said it was the second year they conducted the poster and essay writing contests for Law Day.
The ceremony was also attended by Superior Court Associate Judges David A. Wiseman, Kenneth L. Govendo, and Perry Inos; Saipan Mayor Donald G. Flores, school officials, and court staff.
Sponsored by the CNMI Supreme Court with the help of Northern Marianas Judiciary Historical Society and Public School System, students from private and public schools on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota were invited to create a poster that celebrates the 2012 Law Day theme, “No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom.”
Law Day has been an annual observance in the United States since President Dwight Eisenhower established it in 1958 to mark the nation’s commitment to the rule of law. Locally, the CNMI uses it to reflect upon how the rule of law serves as the foundation for the Commonwealth and contributes to the freedoms people enjoy as members of the American political family.
GCA art teacher Esther Manzano said, “It’s our first time to join the Law Day poster contest and we are glad that the Commonwealth Judiciary recognized the talent of our students.”
Head teacher Susan Pajarillaga said, “We are looking forward in joining again this prestigious contest and we will encourage our students in junior high to join the essay contest next school year.” (GCA)
