Despite two pump price reductions on Saipan totaling 20 cents in the last two weeks, Rota has seen only one price cut and still has the dubious distinction of having the most expensive gas on American soil, ranging from $6 to $6.80 a gallon. Tinian’s prices of $5.999 to $6.549 a gallon remain unchanged.

“We reduced our prices only once recently, and we haven’t received notification yet of an additional price cut,” Rota’s Sasanhaya Service Station manager Beato Calvo told Saipan Tribune yesterday.

Regular unleaded gasoline at Rota’s Sasanhaya Service Station is down to $6 a gallon after a 10-cent drop two weeks ago, Calvo said.

Diesel at Sasanhaya Service station is now $6.80 a gallon.

“High gas prices affect everybody. We live on an island, we don’t have resources so we rely on imported products including gas. We can’t do anything about the gas prices at all so we have to cut somewhere else to make up for the high gas prices,” Calvo said, adding that their service station had to resort to work hour cuts to cope with the business hardships.

In the U.S., average regular gas was $3.693 a gallon as of May 22.

Luta Gas also sells $6 a gallon regular unleaded gasoline after a 10-cent cut on May 18, according to one of its employees yesterday.

On Tinian, prices remain unchanged despite the two price cuts on Saipan.

Tinian’s SN Five sells regular unleaded gasoline for $6 a gallon and diesel for $6.459 a gallon, one of its employees said yesterday.

Its competition, Tinian Fuel Service Station, sells regular unleaded gasoline for $5.999 a gallon and diesel for $6.549 a gallon as of yesterday, one of its employees said.

On Saipan, regular unleaded gasoline at Mobil and Shell service stations is now $4.959 a gallon; super unleaded gasoline is now $5.279 a gallon; and diesel, now $5.319 a gallon.
