Cabinet members ordered to undergo ethics training
Cabinet members and agency heads have been issued a memorandum requiring them to undergo an ethics training provided by the CNMI Office of the Public Auditor on May 6.
According to the memo from the Governor’s Office, all of the officials are required to attend the session as part of efforts to “uphold the trust and integrity” of government offices.
After the training, the department heads will be expected to schedule further training for their respective staff with the CNMI within six months.
“Ethics training is conducted regularly and mostly upon request by various government entities. Such training is important because governments usually have ethics laws and government entities tasked with overseeing these laws,” Michael Pai, CNMI Public Auditor in an e-mail interview, said.
Pai said, “that a major aim of ethics training is to promote awareness of the government ethics laws among government employees to minimize unethical behavior.”
“Of course, there are penalties for unethical behavior in violation of these laws,” Pai said. “This awareness may supplement each employee’s personal system of ethics, which ought to serve as their guide to ‘doing the right thing’ at work and in their daily lives.”
