The Northern Marianas Badminton Association is working closely with the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization to introduce badminton to its regular sporting calendar.

MISO executive director Nick Gross and NMBA officials held a meeting recently to discuss plans on how to conduct the tournament and the format to be used for the one-day event.

A number of Community Badminton Club members are studying at Marianas High School and Saipan Southern High School, while some players are studying at Mt. Carmel School.

Gross said that MISO is always looking forward of offering more sports opportunities to the youth of the Commonwealth.

“MISO and NMBF are proud to inform all public and private high school, grades 9 to 12, in the CNMI that we will be conducting the first ever badminton “stakeholders tournament,” added Gross.

The one-day tournament is set on May 2, Saturday, from 8:30am to 2pm.

Gross said the objective is to build interest in badminton, attract interested players, coaches/teachers, and volunteers in time for the inaugural season in September this year.

Each school will be allowed a maximum of five male and five female players where they will play two singles (boys and girls), two doubles (boys and singles), and mixed doubles. The tournament format will depend on the final number of registrants.

A mandatory coaches/technical meeting is set on April 27, Monday, at 4pm at the MHS Gymnasium. Gross said that all eligibility requirements must also be submitted before the meeting.

MISO has already concluded the seasons of boys and girls basketball, boys and girls volleyball, and coed team tennis. Golf and girls softball are ongoing.
