Public warned of high surf today
A tropical disturbance passing well south of the Marianas is causing increasing wind speeds, enough to require a small craft advisory, according to the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management. In addition, seas are expected to build to between 8 and 10 feet in response to the winds.
A small craft advisory remains in effect until 11am today, Friday.
The Department of Public Safety Boating Section also confirmed high surf at the Grotto in Marpi, making it unsafe for swimmers and divers. Grotto is closed to swimming and diving until further notice.
Fresh to occasionally strong trade winds up to 29 mph and combined seas building to 8 to 10 feet will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft through Friday morning. Highest seas are expected east of the islands.
The public is being advised to avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary exercise caution especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets. A small craft advisory means that wind speeds of 24 to 38 mph are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions to small craft. (HSEM/DPS)
