The 8th Saipan Awaodori Festival kicks off tonight at the Paseo de Marianas in Garapan and will feature seasoned Awaodori cultural dancers from Japan as well as Saipan’s own Awaodori Team.

PDM Promoters Inc. coordinator Sonia Siwa said the Saipan Awaodori Team has been busy rehearsing for the festival.

Siwa said representatives from the Saipan Awaodori Team’s mother dance group in Japan, Tokyo Tensuiren, will once again perform at this year’s festival. Aoishinren and Benkeiren will also be joining this year’s event.

“These professional Awaodori dancers are from Koenji, Japan,” Siwa said.

The festival will have its first performance at the Fiesta Resort & Spa at 5:30pm.

After the Fiesta Resort performance, the group will move to the festival site at the Paseo de Marianas at 6pm.

There will be free raffle tickets and there will be prizes. “We have 100 prizes to give away,” Siwa said. The raffle drawing will start around 6:50pm.

There will be other performances including the Awaodori group for their second stage performance, ukulele players, and the CNMI Domatsuri group. They will perform from 7pm to 8:30pm.

The last performance will be from the Awaodori group once again from 8:30pm to 9pm.

Tokyo Tensuiren has been sending representatives to Saipan for the Awaodori Festival.

The Saipan Awaodori Team under PDM regularly takes part in community outreach activities, including a monthly cleanup of Garapan.
