CUC looks at entry-level salaries
Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board director Joe Torres asked CUC management last week to return the bottom end of CUC’s pay scale to $15,000.
During board discussion, the current pay rate of $14,704 was discussed between the board and CUC’s Human Resources and management.
The board adopted CUC’s pay ranges in November but, according to Torres, he had assumed the entry level was at $15,000 a year.
Torres asked the corporation to revisit the pay ranges and change the rate for entry-level positions.
CUC executive director Alan Fletcher clarified that the $14,704 number was the “bottom end” of the pay range. “We currently have no one making the minimum,” he said. “But that’s possible depending on the skill level of the employee that we would hire in the future.”
He said the ability to raise the minimum level for CUC maintenance workers— their lowest rated or classified positions—rests with the board.
The current pay rate was lowered in 2006, from a pay rate of $15,000 established in 2004.
Torres said he wants the pay rate to “go back” to 2004. “We have a local workforce we are trying to bring in,” he emphasized.
The CUC board had adopted “pay rate option 3” last November, with a lowest pay rate of $14,704.
To accommodate Torres’ request, CUC staff indicated they could switch this pay rate with part of another proposed pay rate option, or “pay rate option 2.” This had a lowest pay rate of $15,495 a year.
