IBB tower to be removed under one training alternative
The International Broadcast Bureau tower on Tinian would be removed and placed outside the U.S. military’s lease area to under one proposed training alternative.
Another alternative would require that the IBB operations remain limited to its current land size.
According to the draft environmental impact statement on joint-live fire training on Tinian and Pagan, “Tinian Alternative 1” would limit the bureau’s size and operations to its current 317-acre fenced site. The current area reserved for the bureau is 866 acres.
The EIS says that under this alternative, bureau staff would be subject to access restrictions. They would have to request access during training events.
Under “Tinian Alternative 2,” military training would be “incompatible” with the bureau’s current site, according to the EIS.
The EIS says the bureau facility would cease operations within the military lease area within the 8- to 10-year construction period for live-fire ranges.
The bureau is located near the proposed “Battle Area Complex” firing range.
Relocation options were not described, but the EIS says alternatives would be evaluated and addressed in future environmental documents.
Requests for comment from the bureau’s public affairs office last week were not returned as of press time yesterday.
