NMD advocates call for accountability and transparency in real estate deals

The Northern Marianas Descent Corp. is pleased that Rep. Roman C. Benavente is heeding NMDC’s position that the CNMI direly needs to adopt standards to ensure fair and reasonable land valuations and transactions. According to NMDC president Joaquin “Jack” Sablan Jr., “This should have been legislated a long time ago so that there would have been set regulations for the government and private entities to adhere to. That is what and why we are here for, to advocate and educate on behalf of the indigenous people so that transparency and accountability are practiced, resulting in mutual social and economic benefits [for] both sides.”

Our leaders in the Legislative, Executive, and Judiciary branches should seriously take into consideration and realize that the CNMI has experienced a tremendous collapse in the real estate market and our overall economy, and it’s time that we adopt sound public policies with much needed regulations and guidelines to protect the CNMI and its people from unscrupulous buyers and unlicensed middlemen, especially in anticipation of the economic rebound. NMDC strongly believes that better regulation and enforcement of the real estate market will spur sound and sustainable economic development through reasonable land valuations and better regulation of real estate sellers and land transactions. The end result would be a win-win economic windfall between investors and NMD landowners of private and public lands.
