Relief drives for Typhoon Maysak this Saturday

Two relief drives for the victims of Super Typhoon Maysak will be conducted this Saturday. Maysak hit Chuuk and Yap states in the Federated States of Micronesia last April 1, with four reported deaths and widespread devastation.

The relief drive for typhoon victims in Yap will be from 8am to 5pm at the Kilili Pavilion in Susupe, while the relief drive for victims in Chuuk will be held at the same time but at the Garapan Fishing Base.

CNMI Typhoon Maysak Relief Committee member Marcia Ayuyu said the committee was formed to provide assistance to the neighboring islands.

“In coordination with the CNMI-FSM Association, members of the CNMI Legislature, private businesses, and local non-profit organizations, [we] have created this committee,” she said.

Ayuyu said the relief drive will help provide support that Yap and Chuuk desperately needs.

“We are reaching out to leaders and partners in our business community for help and kindly ask for your assistance in providing necessities for the victims and their families,” Ayuyu said.

Donations can be non-perishable goods, tents, hygienic products such as soap, toothpaste, and tissue; flashlights, canned foods, water, rice, and more.

Ayuyu said that monetary donations can also be made through Bank of Guam, for the “BOG Typhoon Relief Fund.”

The Joeten Kiyu Public Library will also be accepting donations for the people of Chuuk and Yap.

Earlier JKPL technical services librarian Rosalyn Ajoste said that Saipan Shipping, Saipan Stevedore, Construction and Material Supply, Matson Navigation, and the Commonwealth Ports Authority have donated a 40-foot container and agreed to waive all shipping fees in order to send relief supplies to the typhoon-battered islands.

The vessel’s expected travel date is April 18. So JKPL is accepting donations from now until April 17.
