Man, 60, suffers injuries in stabbing case on Rota

A 60-year-old man suffered serious injuries when a visitor allegedly assaulted him with a fishing spear, a chain, and a cooking pot at his residence in Teneto Village on Rota last Saturday.
The victim, a Caucasian male, sustained several lacerations, puncture wounds, contusions and abrasions on the head and upper torso. He was airlifted to Guam via U.S. Navy helicopter for further treatment, police said yesterday.
The suspect, 36-year-old William “Pono” Matthewson, also a Caucasian, was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon, attempted murder, and disturbing the peace. He was brought to the Department of Corrections on Saipan yesterday.
Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Jason Tarkong said that on Saturday Rota police responded to an assault incident at a residence in Teneto Village.
Tarkong said preliminary investigation showed that Matthewson visited the victim at his residence, where he then allegedly assaulted him with several objects.
The victim suffered serious injuries and was transported to Rota Health Center for treatment. He was later transferred to Guam for further treatment.
Tarkong said DPS Rota and Saipan are working together to complete the investigation.
He said DPS Commissioner James C. Deleon Guerrero will release more details about the stabbing at a press briefing today, Monday.
