April proclaimed ‘Autism Awareness Month’
Gov. Eloy S. Inos is joined by supporters and lawmakers during a signing ceremony proclaiming April as Autism Awareness Month.
The proclamation, held last Wednesday on Capital Hill, was attended by supporters, lawmakers, government officials, and members of the Autism Society of the CNMI.
Inos underscored the importance of awareness, particularly of autism, which according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is a “complex and not a well understood disability that affects every ethnic group, country, and socioeconomic class.”
“While the cause of autism is still subject to debate, it is important that the CNMI be more aware of the needs of those with it and resources available to help them understand the world they live in and reach their potential,” Inos said.
Aside from the Autism Society of the CNMI, organizations including the Public School System, the Office of the Vocational Rehabilitation, the CNMI Council on Developmental Disabilities, the University Center of Excellence on Development Disabilities of the Northern Marianas College, and the Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy System, Inc. were at hand to support the proclamation.
“I ask all citizens of the Commonwealth to learn about and understand autism and its impact on individuals with autism in our island community so that we can all play a vital part in providing a caring environment in which they can flourish,” Inos said.
