TINIAN-U.S. Marines with Marine Aircraft Group 12, Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, that are participating in Exercise Geiger Fury 2012 received a surprise from the local Tinian vendors on May 17, 2012.

The merchants gathered outside the gates of the Marines’ forward operating base at Tinian’s North Field. From there they proceeded to sell the Marines such items as soap, hand sanitizer, various snacks, calling cards, fresh coconuts, and much more.

The Marines even received watermelon free of charge from the vendors as an appreciation gift courtesy of the Tinian people.

“We are proud to have the Marines here,” said Deborah Fleming, one of several local vendors outside of the FOB. “This is real history in the making. The people of Tinian have been waiting for the Marines to return on a large scale basis for over 30 years.”

The Marines were impressed by the compassion shown to them by the vendors and deeply grateful for their generous praises and show of support.

“It was nice having a little piece of home and comfort come out here,” said Pfc. Jerry R. Kaiser, MAG-12, MWSS-171 heavy equipment operator. “These people have taken time out of their day just to come out here and show their support. The feeling of just being able to buy a Gatorade or even toothpaste is an amazing thing, you just have to be here to understand.”

According to Fleming, the people of Tinian are true patriots. Fleming has sons in the U.S. Army and, like many other Tinian residents who have loved ones serving in the U.S. armed forces, she feels a strong sense of compassion for all those serving in the military.

Thanks to Exercise Geiger Fury 2012 the MAG-12, MWSS 171 Marines have the chance to experience the island culture of the Northern Marianas, an experience that will not soon be forgotten when the Marines return home.
