Department of Public Safety and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel inspect distress flares and lifejackets for a recreational boater at Sugar Dock on Monday, May 14. (LT JOHN PETERSON/USCG)  Sunday, May 13, marked the beginning of the 2012 Safe Boating Week campaign for the CNMI, a week ahead of National Safe Boating Week, which runs from May 19 through 26, 2012.

Saipan’s Department of Public Safety Boating Safety Division and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary were on hand at Sugar Dock and the Garapan Fishing Base this past week to answer questions and conduct vessel safety checks of required safety equipment and functionality for recreational boaters.

General safety gear such as lifejackets, fire extinguishers, distress signals, and VHF radios are checked during these free examinations.

Safe Boating Week activities conclude this Saturday, May 19, at Smiling Cove Marina from 8am to 11am.

National Safe Boating Week is an annual initiative sponsored by the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary to raise awareness of safe boating practices. When mariners take to the water this week and throughout the year, Coast Guard Sector Guam urges mariners to wear a life jacket, purchase, maintain and register an EPIRB and carry appropriate communication equipment on board beyond a cell phone.
