HSC-25 rescues distressed swimmer in Guam
ASAN, Guam—Sailors from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 conducted a search-and-rescue operation and recovered a distressed swimmer in the waters near Pagat Caves off the shores of Mangilao on March 30.
HSC-25 received a request from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam at approximately 2:25pm about a 29-year-old man who was swept out to sea in the vicinity of Pagat Caves.
Rescue 00, a Navy MH-60S helicopter, was launched from Andersen Air Force Base at approximately 2:45pm. The crew located the survivor at 3:35pm. He was then transported to U.S. Naval Hospital Guam, where he was taken by ambulance to Guam Memorial Hospital for treatment.
HSC-25 has conducted seven searches, seven medical evacuations, two rescues, and one recovery effort this year.
“This responsibility that we have and the responsibility that we have to the people of the island of Guam is something that we take very seriously and it is very important that we do it safely and as responsibly as possible,” said Lt. Harry Ehlies, aircraft commander. “Yesterday proves that we have been training properly and we are going in the right direction.”
HSC-25 is the Navy’s only forward-deployed MH-60S expeditionary squadron. As a part of Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Pacific, it provides an armed helicopter capability for U.S. 7th Fleet in support of logistics, search and rescue and humanitarian assistance missions.
HSC-25 is also the only squadron that maintains a 24-hour search-and-rescue and medical evacuation alert posture, directly supporting the U.S. Coast Guard and Joint Region Marianas. (Joint Region Marianas Public Affairs Office)
