Parents invited to Summer Academy info session
Parents of high school seniors and juniors are invited to participate in an information session on Wednesday, April 1, or Saturday, April 18, 2015, to learn about the Summer Academy organized by College Access Challenge Grant Program at the Northern Marianas College.
The Summer Academy gives high school students an opportunity to gain meaningful college experience while they are earning transferable college credits. The academy familiarizes students with college life while they are still in high school and can be an excellent way to help students prepare for their eventual transition to college after graduation.
Students from last year’s Summer Academy take a field trip to the Man’amko Center to meet with man’amko and to learn more about culture and how cultural wear like mwars are made. This year’s Summer Academy will be from June 29, 2015, through Aug. 7, 2015. (NMC)
In addition to college-level work, participants of the Summer Academy will also receive college advising, academic tutoring, and college-preparatory and life skills training.
The program is fully funded by the College Access Challenge Grant, which aims to increase the number of underserved and minority students who are enrolling in college. To do this, the CACG provides a scholarship award to eligible students to cover the cost of their courses.
The information session for parents will be held on two different dates: April 1, 2015, from 5pm to 8pm will be at NMC’s Student Center, Building J. On April 18, 2015, from 9am to 12pm in Room D1 at the NMC campus. Parents of high school seniors and juniors are highly encouraged to participate and to meet with representatives of the CACG program to learn more about the Summer Academy.
The agenda for the sessions will include a discussion of the Summer Academy Experience, the early admissions process, financial aid opportunities, and other important topics.
The Summer Academy for students will run from June 29, 2015, through Aug. 7, 2015. Although classes for the Summer Academy will be held at NMC’s As Terlaje campus, some activities will be located off-campus and will be announced in advance. Eligibility for participation in the Summer Academy is based low-income status and English placement level. The deadline to apply for the Summer Academy is April 30, 2015.
