INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
US envoy urges Pohnpei women to take responsibility for themselves
U.S. Ambassador Doria Rosen presented the keynote remarks on Friday, March 13, at Pohnpei’s celebration of International Women’s Day.
Using the theme for the day, “My Life, My Responsibility,” she called on women to take responsibility for themselves and those within their sphere of influence. Much of the talk stressed the importance of educating today’s young women.

“Women played an important role in traditional Pohnpei and they remain just as important today. Women are half of the population, and if they are not fully participating in society, then half of the nation’s natural resources are being wasted. When women fully participate in all aspects of society the country will see stronger economic growth,” she said.
After her remarks she enjoyed visiting with the local women and watched dances performed by representatives of each of the Women’s Groups from around the island. (U.S. Embassy Kolonia)
